Four Dutch DVDs Ordered

As well as having two german books on order, I'm now expecting four Dutch Boes DVDs.

I ordered:

Vol.1 - Hallo Boes (Hello Boes)
Vol.3 - Dollen Met De Mollen (Of Thole Pins With Wrecks)
Vol.4 - Boes Weet Wat Een Varken Eet (Boes Weet What Eats A Pig)
Vol.5 - Held Op Klompen (Hero On Shoes)

There's eleven volumes in all to collect. I've completed the U.S.A. VHS set so I had to find something else to collect! The DVDs should come in handy when it comes to grabbing crystal clear screen caps for the web site!

If you are a homeowner with bad credit, here are five tips, from A to E, that could pinch you sod a $50,000 bad credit personal advance from non-bank lenders. It may non-standard like like a mind-boggling amount, but there are lenders to help you with your financial solution.

Your pre-eminent bet is to butt private lenders who entertain stepped in to grow the void. These lenders in the main effort online, or on the internet. Myriad folks organize bad credit scores; banks intention not fit to them; clandestinely lenders will. There are scores of them, but more on that later.

PRESENT B: Checking Lenders

"Porker Problems" Arrives

above: the front of the "Porker Problems" video cassette box

above: the back of the "Porker Problems" video cassette box

Finally finished my U.S.A. video collection today when "Porker Problems" arrived. Unfortunately it didn't contain any new episodes. It was actually an episode of Ox Tales in it's original form (a twenty two-minute episode made up of two cartoons). It does raise some interesting new questions though. The cartoons are "Momma Peggy Leaves Home" (ep.7) and "No Fishing" (ep.11). But this video contains the title cards for each cartoon and they have different titles. They are "Porker Problems" (ep.7) and "A Fish Story" (ep.11). Do all of the English/American dubbed episodes have different titles than the ones on my list? It did offer up one interesting new bit of information though. The title cards list R. Dwight as the writer of the show. So now I have a new name to google.

2. "It's Not Easy To Manage A Farm"

It's been a while since I last posted on here because I've been using my time to dabble in online videos. But never fear, I'm back! And it just so happens that I have a review of episode two to share with everybody.

Ollie starts the day by milking a cow. The cow has abnormally large udders and needs milking as soon as possible. Ollie comes up with the idea of connecting taps to them which works well for a while until it milks her dry. Next Ollie has a problem with the cow swatting at a fly with her tail while he milks her. He thinks he has the answer by anchoring her tail with a rock, but she still manages to bring it up and the rock comes crashing down over her head. She then falls to her to belly and the milk jets out of her udders.

Ollie then tries to tame Horace the horse. He tries to pull Horace with a rope but ends up stretching his neck out to where he looks like a giraffe. After a few more attempts at taming him he tries to reshoe Horace. He uses two big planks of wood and turns Horace into a lifesize rocking horse. He then trades the rockers for four wheels. Ollie then mounts him and they take off together with a promising start but end up crashing through a wooden fence.

Next Ollie goes to the hen house to collect the eggs. When he collects Hannah the hen's eggs it makes her mad and she lays a red hot egg. She tries to sit on it and burns her backside in the process. She then walks around the farmyard looking for things to sit on. She sits on a toadstool and a coconut and both times it causes them to become red hot. She then finds Jack the turtle tucked up in his shell and attempts to hatch him out. Jack becomes red and overheated inside his shell and dashes out and into a nearby lake. Hannah's weight then crushes his shell.

Ollie then finds out that Shirley the sheep has fallen into a pond. Ollie saves her and wrings her out like a giant towel. He then attempts to restyle her wool. His first attempt ends up with her looking like a giant poodle. He then sets her wool in curlers but it starts to rain and they get washed out. Ollie then plays his horn for his flock of sheep. He says he bought the horn from a retired snake charmer. Single strands of wool start to lift towards the sky as if they were being charmed like snakes.

Ollie then goes to chop wood. After missing the wood with his axe on two occasions, he swings with all his might and misses again, causing the ground to crack open and it eventually splits the world in half.

Ollie finishes his day with a relaxing bath. After Sammy helps Ollie by washing his back, a group of animals start to drink from Ollie's bath water. Edward the elephant then turns up and sucks all of Ollie's water out with his trunk. He then spurts it into the air and gives himself a shower.

It defintely comes across as the second cartoon. The first cartoon ("Hello Ollie") established how and why Ollie decided to build his farm house. This cartoon gives the viewers an insight into some of the main characters. It's not a great story-driven episode but it wasn't intended to be. It's also interesting to note that a few of the gags in this show became full length cartoons later on. The cow milking gags later became episode fifteen: "Who Stole The Milk?" and the horse gags later became episode eighteen: "The Horse Race". This cartoon isn't a classic but it is important to the series.

Cigar Bands Arrive/50th Post

This is my fiftieth post on this blog. That's quite a landmark number for somebody who gets bored with projects very easily! I guess this one just inspires me or something.

The cigar bands are cool little items. They're a series of ten. As you can see I've scanned number one of the series. More will follow when the web site's merchandise section is up. They seem to tell a story is you rearrange them so it appears the pictures are from a comic strip. Very impressed!!!

Ox Tales Volume One Arrives

above: the front of the Farm life has never been this wacky! video cassette box

The first volume of Ox Tales arrived today. The subtitle for the video is Farm life has never been this wacky! The picture quality isn't the best I've ever seen, but I do intend to purchase another copy to assist me with screen captures.

As expected it included ten of the earlier episodes. Once again they are out of order. The playlist is as follows:

1. "Hello Ollie" (ep.1)
2. "It's Not Easy to Manage a Farm" (ep.2)
3. "A Small Kindness, a Terrible Nuisance" (ep.3)
4. "Working on the Field" (ep.4)
5. "Momma Peggy Leaves Home" (ep.7)
6. "No Fishing" (ep.11)
7. "The Octopus Balloon" (ep.5)
8. "A Peaceful Day" (ep.6)
9. "Love is a Thorny Affair" (ep.10)
10. "The Guard" (ep.8)

I now own 26 cartoons. Episodes 1 through 25 and episode 27. I'm expecting "Porker Problems" any day now...

Constructing A Temporary Front Page

Today I've been constructing a temporary front page for the Hey Big Guy web site. Nothing fancy, just a page to link the new domain up too. It should be up within the next few days. I'm planning on including five to ten easter eggs on the site so it should be a lot of fun.

17. "Walter"

As you'll see by the episode list elsewhere on this blog, the original title for this cartoon was "Woody". I've decided to rename it "Walter" because of the name of the woodpecker in the cartoon. I'm presuming the woodpecker was called Woody in the Dutch version and that the episode was named after him. I'll make sure to point this out on the web site.

Ollie is resting against a tree when he is disturbed by Willy the woodpecker teaching his young nephew Walter the fine art of wood pecking. Walter tries to peck a hole in the bark and a jet of water shoots out, knocking him to the ground. Ollie laughs so Uncle Willy pecks several holes in the tree and the water jets out and soaks Ollie. Willy then pushes the dehydrated tree over and it squashes on Ollie.

The woodpeckers then find a group of palm trees to practice on. Willy pecks at a coconut causing the milk to leak out. A nearby nearby camel drinks the milk which causes two humps to form on his back. Walter gives it a try but knocks the coconuts out of the tree and they land on the camel's head, causing two lumps.

Fed up with the woodpeckers, Ollie rows out to sea to avoid them. The woodpeckers, however, catch up with Ollie and torment a nearby whale. Willy pecks at the whale's back causing the whale to have six additional water spouts. Walter gives it a try but doesn't manage to draw any water. He looks down the hole and the water jets into his eye, throwing him into the air on a fountain of water.

Back on land, Walter resumes his wood pecking. As Walter pecks, his whole body vibrates causing him to fly backwards. He finds Ollie and Jack drinking from a water barrel and attempts to peck it. He gets the same backwards vibrating result. Ollie laughs and Walter pecks at the buttons on his dungarees, causing them to fall down. Jack laughs and Walter pecks a hole in the top of his shell.

Next we find Edward the elephant with two broken tusks. He finds Willy and Walter sitting in two holes in a tree trunk. He sticks his tusks inside the trunk and the woodpeckers work on them dentist-style (drill sound effects and all). Unfortunately Walter, being inexperienced, has pecked one of the tusks too short and it leaves Edward looking ridiculous.

Willy then finds another tree to peck. Unfortunatley a bird occupying a nest on one of the branches is not very appreciative of his efforts. Her eggs start to crack open so she swoops down and drives Walter's beak into the trunk. Walter then annoys Mr. Squirrel with his pecking and causes the Mr. Squirrel's stash of acorns to spill out. Mr. Squirrel attempts to gain revenge by pelting him with acorns, but it causes Walter to circle around the tree whilst pecking which leads to the tree falling over.

Walter then pecks Hilda the hippo's back. It punctures here and she's goes flying into the air like a deflating balloon. She ends up flattened and out of air on a tree branch. Walter then goes back to pecking and is joined by Gaylord the gorilla who is beating on his chest. Walter loses his cool and swoops down and pecks his chest. Gaylord laughs it off as if he's being tickled and runs away while being chased by Walter.

Walter then spies a young female woodpecker in a tree and becomes smitten. He shows off to her by carving her tree into a Roman-style pillar.

Walter then spies Audrey with her head buried in the ground. He swoops down and pecks on her neck. She trys to escape him by burrowing deeper into the ground until the only things that are visable are her two feet.

Walter then sets about pecking the hen house. Robby the rooster rants and raves at Walter so Ollie tells him to find something else to practice on. Walter takes it the wrong way and starts to peck Ollie's horns. Jack laughs which causes Walter to swoop down to try to peck him but Jack manages to get a rock up for protection which causes Walter's beak to bend at the end. Fortunately Uncle Willy uses his dentistry skills to straighten out his beak.

Back at Ollie's house eveything is calm and still until Walter comes visiting. He pecks Ollie's water barrel, causing it to leak. He then flys inside the house where Ollie is sleeping. He starts to peck at Ollie's clogs. The next morning when Ollie puts them on, he discovers Walter has carved them into rollerskates. He comes smashing out of his front door and after smashing through the hen house and slopping the pigs in record time he comes to an abrupt halt when he crashes into Jack. Walter appears and asks Ollie how he likes his new skates. Ollie tells him he'll have to bill him later.

This was one of those cartoons where it concentrated on the bit player with Ollie confined to the supporting role. This one worked really well. Most enjoyable. Some of the physical comedy is a bit shocking (Walter pecking at a whale causing it to leak and Walter pecking at Hilda, causing her to pop) but that's what you come to expect from Ox Tales!

16. "Snow"

On with the seventh review. When these reviews make it to the web site they will be more detailed and will be accompanied by several screen caps. Anyway, on with "Snow"...

Ollie wakes up to a very cold morning. He opens his refridgerator and finds a group of penguins inside. After they wreak havoc inside his house, Ollie goes outside to wake up Jack. He finds Jack frozen inside his shell. Ollie manages to force it open but breaks it in the process. Jack starts shivering and sneezing and causes snow to avalanche off the roof onto him.

Ollie sets out with a snow shovel to clear a path from his house but instead rolls the snow up like a giant carpet. A group of moles pop out from the newly cleared path and make fun of Ollie, causing Ollie to lose his cool and the snow rolls back out.

Next Ollie tries his hand at building an igloo. He crawls inside but is soon joined by Paul the polar bear. A fight breaks out inside that soon spills to the outside. Ollie throws snow balls at Paul, whose coat is made up of igloo-type ice blocks, and causes him to fall apart. Ollie has a final igloo-related idea when he builds a fire inside it. Naturally the igloo melts.

Ollie starts sneezing as he walks through the snow. He finds Jack with a new igloo-style shell. Ollie sneezes and causes Jack's makeshift shell to fall off.

Ollie decides to try his hand at skiing. He races Down Hill Donny the stork and Turbo Tail Teddy the kangaroo but ends up going over the edge of a cliff. Sammy jumps on Ollie's abandoned skis and shows off with a few tricks. Ollie rolls down a hill, becoming a giant snow ball in the process. He even takes in a squirrel as he rolls down the hill.

Ollie then goes ice fishing with his rod and ice saw. He cuts loose a duck that had been frozen in a pond then drops a fishing line down the hole. Unfortunately his clogs become frozen to the ice so he cuts away the ice forming two skates which he skates back to land with. He jumps up and down to break off the ice then realizes he can feel something tugging at his line. He tries to pull it in but the entire pond flips over and squashes him flat.

Ollie cuts another hole and brings up a large block of ice up with fish frozen inside it. Paul the polar bear then pops up through the hole and grabs Ollie's tail. Ollie pulls away with all his might and Paul ends up all stretched out.

Ollie looks for another fishing spot and finds a group of four storks frozen into a pond. He tries to scare them away which causes them to fly off together joined at the ankles by the ice. He then cuts another hole and a group of seals pop out. A giant walrus also squeezes out through the hole.

Ollie makes one last attempt to cut a hole and a giant jet of water spurts out. Soon the entire screen fills up with water and Jack floats into the shot. He tells Ollie that he could catch a cold standing in freezing water and Ollie comments "What a revolting development this is."

A great little cartoon. The winter setting made for a very different looking cartoon. It certainly stands out from the pack in respects to different visuals. That along with some good gags made for a great cartoon.

www.HeyBigGuy.com

Finally bought the domain (literally minutes ago) for my proposed Ox Tales web site. As you can tell by the title, I'm the proud new owner of www.HeyBigGuy.com. Obviously the inspiration came from the "Hey big guy, you are my kind of hero..." lyric from the English opening titles.

It's the domain I really wanted right from the start. The plan was to have www.HeyBigGuy.com as the main site and "Hey Blog Guy" as the blog (sort of like brother and sister sites). Glad it's all finally panned out. I've just got to put the site together now! (The dotcom is dead linked at the moment, I'll keep you all up to date on any progress I make.)

Political Correctness Gone Mad...

I just submitted my Funny Farm Madness and "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" reviews to Yahoo!'s movie section. Click on the User Reviews links to access them.

I have a funny story to tell about the "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" review. When listing the episode "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo", Yahoo's language filter changed it to "*****-A-Doodle-Doo". In the end I had to settle for "Coc-A-Doodle-Doo". It's political correctness gone mad I tell you!

15. "Who Stole the Milk?"

It's time to get back into my episode reviewing. This is the fifteenth cartoon in the Ox Tales series.

Calvin the calf is drinking milk from his mother, Nessie. Two moles attempt to steal milk from Nessie's udders with straws but Calvin puts a stop to it. Ollie comes to collect Nessie to be milked and Calvin is not happy about it, wanting all the milk to himself. Calvin instead goes looking for milk from the other animals on the farm.

Ollie starts mowing the grass, and after managing to smash Jack's shell in the process, Ollie comes up with an ingenious idea. He hooks up the lawn mower to Nessie collar and as she walks along the grass flies into her mouth.

After bothering the mother pig, Zane the zebra and Edward the elephant for milk, Calvin returns to his mother. Nessie's udders are almost fit to burst but Ollie still insists that he shouldn't drink the milk. He goes to the extent of tying a bucket over her udders to deny Calvin the chance to drink.

Ollie then puts Nessie out to pasture. He attaches her to Sammy the dog with a rope to help her exercise. Nessie's udders expand again and Sammy starts drinking from them. Calvin objects and chases Sammy around in circles, causing the rope to wrap around Nessie's legs which eventually trips her up.

Then it's milking time again. Ollie uses a pump and goes too fast, leaving her udders dry. Calvin gets mad and chases Ollie all over the farm. He catches up with Ollie and knocks him down. With Ollie grounded Calvin starts looking for an udder on Ollie causing Ollie to roll around laughing.

The cartoon concludes with Ollie offering a giant baby bottle filled with milk, topped off with a four udder teat, to Calvin but Calvin continues to drink from his mother. Ollie tries to demonstrate by drinking from it himself but to no avail.

I liked this episode a lot. It was certainly weird in spots but that's what I love about Ox Tales. The sequence where Calvin is chasing Ollie all over the farm is the clip you see in the opening title sequence. I'm eventually going to write a breakdown illustrating where each clip from the title sequence came from.

Big Things Are Happening

Well it's been a week of ups and downs for this blog, what with the German book debacle. But I've a few things under my hat that are going to add a lot to my research into this early ninties classic.

First off, as you can see above, I have purchased "Porker Problems". It's the forth and final volume of Just For Kids video collection. Basically these will be the last English spoken episodes I'll be able to lay my hands on. But I have something in the works...

I'm currently working on a trade with a fellow internet cartoon collector for the entire series of Ox Tales in a foreign language. What is the use in owning the episodes in a foreign language? Well this is how I'm going to get screen captures for the remaining episodes. And because a lot of the humour is so visual I should be able to get a basic jist for each story.

And finally, it looks like I'll finally be able to purchase that illusive German comic book I was denied. Not only that, but the person is also offering another volume of it.

I hope writing all of this hasn't jinxed me in anyway. It really looks like all of this will come to fruition.

On a final note, I still have yet to receive volume one of the Ox Tales that I ordered last Sunday. If it doesn't arrive with Monday's mail, they can expect an email from me!

A Different Purchase.

Well I'm finally over my little run around with the German book (BUT IF YOU SAY YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN STOCK YOU SHOULD...okay, no more ranting). But now I've made another non-video purchase and hopefully I should be receiving it soon.

It's a collection of cigar bands that I've purchased from a seller in the U.K. They're listed as having the Boes character printed on them so I'm assuming they're from the Netherlands. It worked out to around $9.44 to purchase and ship them. They certainly are a curious little item to own. Not sure if they are official or not but I'm looking forward to receiving them nonetheless!

German Book Ordered

Made a fantastic purchase last night. I found an online bookstore that was selling a German Ox Tales book! Naturally I ordered it straight away.

It called "Einfach Tierisch 2 Ohne Federlesen". This translates to "Simply Animal 2 Without Feather/Spring Vintages ". I know, it still doesn't make much sense but I would assume that it means something along the lines of this: Simply Animal is the series of books, the number two means this is the second in the series, Without Feather is the title of this particular book and Spring Vintages means it was released in the spring. This is just my interpretation, I could be wrong! It's fully coloured (from what I can gather) and is made up of 48 pages. The book is schedueled to arrive by next Wednesday.

Expect lots of scans whenever I receive it!

14. "Shooting Contest"

Ollie is shooting arrows at a target with less than successful results. Jack laughs and says he's a better shot with his sling shot. He then demonstrates but loses his first rock down a mole hill then he hits Audrey on the beak with the second. She gives chase and ends up smashing Jack's shell with her foot.

After losing Audrey, Jack continues his target practice. He manages to enrage a pig and Rodney in the process. Meanwhile Ollie is also practicing with equally disastrous results, annoying a peacock and Zane the zebra. Ollie then preys on a moose. The moose pleads for his life, putting his antlers together as if they were begging hands. Ollie feels bad and backs off. He then finds Tom the turkey for target practice. Terrified, Tom wraps his snood around his eyes as if it were a blindfold. Ollie feels bad and backs down.

Ollie then acquires Sammy's services to fetch the arrows he shoots. After a few mishaps he eventually ends up with an arrow in his backside. Ollie then notices a rustling bush. He blindly shoots an arrow into it and Sammy dives in after it. A bear emerges with Sammy in his mouth and gives chase to Ollie.

Ollie then persuades Gaylord to help him. Gaylord stands with his back to a tree with an apple balanced on his head. Before Ollie can take his shot Gaylord snatches the apple off his head and eats it. He then replaces it with a banana but then eats that too. Gaylord throws the skin into the air and Ollie takes a shot at the moving target. Unfortunately the arrow slips on the skin and redirects itself to where it's chasing Ollie. Jack saves him by firing a rock at it, breaking it in two. Ollie commends him for his marksmanship.

They then wrap up the contest with one more shot each. Jack fires at an apple hanging from a tree. He fires the rock in the opposite direction and it circumnavigates the globe, coming in from behind and knocking it off the branch. Ollie then shoots an arrow at a bird's nest. Before it gets to the nest three birds perch themselves on the arrow and use it as a free ride to their home.

Ollie boasts about his talent which brings out Patrick the porcupine. Patrick chases Ollie using a bow to shoot quills into his backside to close the episode.

A very gag-heavy episode. Really fun with some creative scenarios.

1. "Hello Ollie"

Thought I'd jump into my time machine and go back to episode one today. Seeing as how I have volume one of the Ox Tales video on order and it'll most likely have the first ten episodes on it, I though I'd get a jump start on it and review ep.1.

Ollie and Jack are sailing on a raft down a river when the raft mysteriously sprouts limbs and becomes a fully grown bush. To add to their problems the raft then goes careering over a waterfall. Upon landing on the river bank below Jack smashes his shell as well as the shell of a fellow turtle.

Liking what he sees, Ollie decides to build a house. When chopping down lumber, Ollie mistakenly takes a swing at Rodney the rhino's leg. Rodney gives chase but Ollie manages to escape from the line of fire and Rodney gets his horn stuck in a tree trunk. Ollie manages to cut him free but a portion of the trunk remains on his horn.

He then starts digging the foundation for his wall but Audrey the ostrich has other ideas. She first gets in the way by digging for worms where Ollie is working. She then interferes by punching out bricks with her beak as Ollie lays them. He solves this problem by building her head and neck into the wall.

He then trys to mix up some more cement, using Edward the elephant as a means to transport water, but this time a family of pigs intervenes. Besides drinking from his buckets of water, they also use his cement as a waller. Ollie jumps in after them but they're all soon frozen together like a collection of statues.

Ollie then thatches the roof but unfortunately Horace the horse starts eating it. Ollie puts a stop to this by cutting off Horace's tail with a big pair of shears and replacing the missing thatch with it. The MacDuff's, a family of storks, then set up home on the roof.

The house is finally finished and it's time to show his new friends, but Ollie can't get the front door open. Despite a joint effort of the pigs, Audrey and Horace, the door won't budge. Rodney eventually lends a helping hand by charging at the door. Unfortunately this brings the whole house down. The cartoon concludes with the door skewered over Rodney's horn.

So there you have it, the first episode of Ox Tales. You may have noticed that I've replaced the episode title "Hello Boes" with "Hello Ollie". That's because I'm going to replace the Dutch names with the English names (i.e. "Rambau" becomes "Gaylord", "A Boes Lullaby" becomes "An Ollie Lullaby" etc.). It was a great first episode which set the tone for the series. It was really good in giving the viewer ideas about which characters have which qualities.

Volume One Ordered

I ordered the first volume of Ox Tales from Amazon today. It's simply called Ox Tales, no subtitle. The tape cost $10.24 and the shipping cost $2.49.

It was originally released on June 19th, 1990. I'm buying this pretty much sight unseen so I'm not sure about the quality of the cassette or the box. Guess I'll have to wait and see!

I'm guessing (based on my experiences with volumes two and three) it should contain episodes 1 through 8, 10 and 11 (in a jumbled order of course!). It's reportedly a two hour cassette (strangely it reads one hour on the above scan, but if you scroll down to my May 24th "First Two Videos Ordered..." post, the accompanying picture for Funny Farm Madness lists it as one hour in length whereas the one I received was two hours long.) so that should mean ten more episodes. It should really help flesh out my collection.

Once this one arrives I'll have three of the four volumes in my possession. Hopefully I'll be ordering volume four sooner than later!

Boes Comic Strip.

Earlier in this blog I wrote that Ox Tales originated from a Dutch comic strip called Boes. The strip is a creation of Thijs Wilms (writer) and Wil Raymakers (artist) which debuted in 1980. Here is one of those strips. I have more to upload and will be doing so every so often. The Dutch definitely have the market cornered on dark humour!

Ox Tales is certainly a bit weird when it comes to it's humour. Especially because it's also quite gross at the same time...

13. "Jumpy Baby"

Ollie is resting against a tree in the forest until he's interrupted by Bob and Weave, the two mischevious kangaroo children of Holly. Ollie had nicknamed them Bob and Weave because of their love of fighting each other. Holly apologizes for their behaviour and hops off. She bumps into fellow kangaroo Jenny who has a surprise for the two young joeys. It's her spring loaded pouch where a toy joey pops out as if it was a jack in the box. Holly asks her to apologize for scaring her children but she just hops away saying it was just a joke.

Next we see Holly expanding her pouch to make a wrestling ring. Bob and Weave end up rolling around together and Ollie comments that it looks like a great new pinball machine. Her pouch then becomes a trampoline, stretched out between two tree stumps. Weave gets too carried away and jumps too high. He even ends up crashing headfirst into a flying saucer. He falls back down to earth screaming "Fall home, fall home, fall, home!" The narrating toucan corrects him by saying "That's phone home, not fall home dummy."

A storm then passes over. Bob and Weave seek refuge in their mother's pouch but it soon becomes waterlogged. Once the sun comes out they use it as a swimming pool. Ollie, not wanting to miss out on the fun, asks if he can try it too. She obliges and Ollie starts taking a bubble bath in it. Ollie shows his gratitude by giving the kangaroo family some free food. Before long the baby joeys have over eaten and begin to weigh down their mother.

The next scene sees Holly dropping both of her babies as she hops through the forest. It's only after meeting up with Jenny again that she realizes she's misplaced them. She goes looking for them but is swept up by an eagle and taken back to it's nest. Thankfully she is reunited with Weave, who had also been snatched up, but she still hasn't found Bob.

Back in the forest Bob is frantically searching for his mother and sibling. He springboards over some of the other animals, including Jack whose shell he breaks. Holly, Bob and Weave finally reunite as they cross paths with each other again.

Holly starts to hop away again but manages to drop Bob for the second time. Ollie sees this and offers a solution. He gives her a backpack for Bob to sit in while Weave rides up front.

This is my favourite episode I've reviewed thus far. It had a strong story and the gags were masterfully paced. This is Ox Tales at it's best.

12. "Nest Making Contest"

I didn't plan to upload two reviews today, but here is another. Episode 12: "Nest Making Contest"

Ollie is walking through the forest when he spots a young chick laying in the grass. He stops to pick it up and asks if it fell out of it's nest. He's then joined by two more birds who use him as a perch. This segues into Ollie making bird houses for all the birds in the forest.

Once the first one is made, the first bird is unable to enter it - Ollie forgot to cut a hole in the front. A woodpecker sees to that problem and pecks a hole in it. Ollie then continues to make more bird houses. He makes one with a central house with a series of little houses either side of it so a mother and her children can each have their own bedrooms. He also makes a large bird house with forteen holes in the front so it's like a condominium. He catches a cat in one of the bird houses and cages it up and hangs it from a nearby branch. A smaller bird torments the cat through the bars.

After a couple of skits about birds feeding their chicks we find Jack sleeping inside his shell. A crow swoops down and taps on it which causes a piece of it to fall off. He picks it up and takes it back to his family on a cliff. He continues to do this over and over until he's reassembled the shell on the cliff and makes a nest inside it for his young chicks. Jack wakes up shivering and sneezing.

Back at the farm house Ollie is playing a flute in his living room. His cuckoo clock strikes twelve and a nest of chicks pop out. A bird then feeds the hungry chicks. He then hears chirping outside and finds a young bird struggling to fly. Ollie gives it a helping hand by tying a helium filled balloon to it. In another part of the forest a mother is giving her chicks flying lessons. The lazy chicks just hold onto her legs and form a chain behind her as she takes off.

It's then time for singing lessons as a mother struggles to teach her young chicks to sing. Ollie turns up with his flute and plays for the birds as they all sing along. A cobra pops out of the ground scaring all the birds away but Ollie manages to charm it with his flute.

Back at the farm house Ollie is playing his flute in his living room. His cuckoo clock starts to bulge and contort until it eventually explodes. Ollie looks to the audience and says that some folks just don't like good music.

One of the stranger episodes. Instead of a the storyline it's more of a skit after skit format. Had some funny moments though.

9. "Digging a Well"

Here is my first review of a cartoon from Ox Tales. Episode nine: "Digging a Well". When the website is up and running and I'm working on the episode guide these are going to be more detailed. On this blog they are going to be more of a recap than be-all-and-end-all descriptions. This review is taken from the Funny Farm Madness tape.

Ollie goes to his well for a drink of water and realizes that it's become dry. He tells Jack that they'll need to dig the well deeper.

Ollie rounds up a group of moles in a wheel barrow and tips them down the well hoping they'll get the job done. Jack questions if the moles can get the job done properly so Ollie lowers Jack down with a rope to supervise them. He finds they have dug a maze of little tunnels and soon gets lost in them. Ollie shouts down the hole for Jack not to worry because he has an idea of how to get him out. He returns with Edward the elephant. Ollie sticks Edward's trunk into a mole hill and Edward blows down it. After a couple of attempts Jack comes popping out of a mole hill.

Ollie then calls upon Sammy the dog for help. Over excited, Sammy first pulls out a bone out of a hole then a hibernating bear. Ollie, getting impatient, tells Sammy they are looking for water so Sammy dives into the ground like a corkscrew. It looks promising but Sammy eventually sticks his head back out of the ground with his nose all twisted up.

Ollie decides that the only way to get things done right is to do them himself. He says any fool can dig a well and Jack says he's right and he's doing a good job. Ollie eventually runs into rock and starts pounding on it with a small hammer. That doesn't work so he starts using a bigger hammer. As he continues to pound with all his might Jack's shell starts to shake, trees start to disappear into the ground, and it starts having adverse affect on all the animals. Before long it starts affecting the entire world. The Eiffel tower disappears into the ground, The Statue of Liberty's arm starts to fall, the Leaning Tower of Pisa straightens up, the Sphinx sits up and begs and a pyramid changes shape into a cube.

After going even deeper, Ollie and Jack discover a strange gray rock with a cross on it. Ollie rubs on it and the Earth begins to laugh. It turns out it was the Earth's navel. It pops out and they and realize that they are at the centre of the Earth because they can see the sea on the other side of the world. Ollie says he's always wanted to go deep sea fishing.

Back on land, Ollie drops a lure on a rope down the well to try and catch some sea fish. He eventually pulls out a narwhal which gets stuck at the top of the well. Pressure builds up and a giant gush of water shoots into the air. Ollie and Jack do a celebration dance for having finally hit water. Unfortunately the water doesn't stop coming. The entire Earth eventually floods and before long the entire farm is under water. As fish, pigs and roosters float past the screen the narrating toucan wishes everyone a "Pleasant au resevoir" to close out the show.

A really funny cartoon. There are lots of little jokes/puns from the show that I haven't included. They will be part of the website reviews. Right now I'm trying to decide how to present these. As Ox Tales is so one-liner oriented I'm thinking about having a Gag-o-meter in each review, recapping how many good/bad jokes there were in each show (and they come thick and fast). Another thing to keep track of might be how many times Jack breaks his shell in each episode. As far as Jack's shell goes it might make a good little subsection on the site by itself.
