"Ollie, Ollie Oxen"

above: the front of the "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" video cassette box

above: the back of the "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" video cassette box

Got a chance to make the DVD+R backup copy of "Ollie, Ollie Oxen", volume three of the Ox Tales series. The picture was in tip top shape considering the tape is sixteen years old. As with Funny Farm Madness, the cartoons are out of the order if you go by the episode guide. They are as follows:

1. "It's Hard to Be a King" (ep.20)
2. "Pigs After Rain" (ep.22)
3. "No Arm Wrestling Anymore" (ep.23)
4. "Cheese" (ep.24)
5. "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo" (ep.27)
6. "Wandering Around the World" (ep.25)

So on this release we have cartoons 20, 22-25 and 27 in a random order.

Between this tape and Funny Farm Madness I now have sixteen cartoons: 9, 12-25 and 27.

The Tapes Arrive!!!

above: the front of the Funny Farm Madness video cassette box

above: the back of the Funny Farm Madness video cassette box

As you can tell by the title, my Ox Tales videos arrived today. Both boxes were in great condition ("Ollie, Ollie Oxen" was slightly faded but nothing major). Funny Farm Madness is officially volume two of the video series and "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" is number three. I haven't watched either indepth yet but you can bet that is coming in the very near future.

So far I have watched Funny Farm Madness. I was mainly just playing it through to see what kind of condition it was in. I was making a DVD+R backup at the same time so I wouldn't have to watch the tape again and risk wearing it out. The picture wasn't in the greatest of conditions but it was watchable. At various points the screen pulls at the top so I'm going to have to look for a better copy before I can get screen caps from this release.

Funny Farm Madness is strange in it's playlist. The cartoons are kind of back to front and muddled up as far as the episode guide goes. You'll see what I mean here:

1. "Digging a Well" (ep.9)
2. "Nest Making Contest" (ep.12)
3. "Snow" (ep.16)
4. "The Horse Race" (ep.18)
5. "Who Stole the Milk?" (ep.15)
6. "Woody" (ep.17)
7. "Shooting Contest" (ep.14)
8. "The Lost Baby Elephant" (ep.21)
9. "Jumpy Baby" (ep.13)
10. "Gaylord" (ep.19)

So you have episode 9, episodes 12 thru 19 (albeit in a jumbled order) and episode 21. What happened to 10, 11 and 20 I don't know. I had a quick look at "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" and episode 20 ("It's Hard to Be King") is the first on the tape.

Tomorrow I'll be making the backup DVD of "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" so I should have a playlist for it by then.

"Hey Blog Guy" Fairing Well on Google.

Thought I'd do another Google search for Ox Tales today. Lo and behold my blog popped up! If you search "Ox Tales" (with quotations) it's pops up on the first page as number eight out of 596. If you search with Ox Tales (without the quotations) it turns up on page three at number 22 out of 1,260,000. If you search for Fantazoo it clocks in at 17 out of 9,970. That definitely made my day! What a way to celebrate the one week anniversary of this blog...

A Message from the Internet Gods.

Cool thing happened to me yesterday. I was in my garden and out crawled a gopher. No, not one of those small furry creatures. It was a southern states of America gopher. A gigantic tortise that's around the size of a football. It totally made my day. I'd NEVER seen one of those before! Thought I'd upload this picture to my blog because it seemed like meeting that gopher in my garden, which looked a lot like Jack from Ox Tales, was like a sign from the internet gods that I'm on the right track with this thing and I need to see it through to the end!!!

No Ox Tales tape drop over the weekend. With it being Memorial Day, it's not arriving tomorrow. So fingers crossed for Tuesday...

Taking a Break.

I've made the decision to take a break from researching Ox Tales today. After the previous four days of intensive googling, I feel like I'm all googled out. My brain is so wrapped up in Ox Tales, Boes, Fantazoo etc., I can hardly think straight!!! When I went to bed last night all I could think about was the Dutch theme song. That high pitched "Boes Boes, Boes Boes" just wouldn't leave my head!!! Funny, yet quite disturbing.

Didn't receive any OT videos today. If they don't arrive by tomorrow (Saturday) the earliest they can arrive is this coming Tuesday (what with Memorial day and all). But that's fine. I think they'll be worth the wait.

No, today I will be catching up on the Prisoner: Cell Block H DVD set that I won off of eBay. Eight episodes down, four to go...

Ox Tales Episode Count.

Haven't found a definitive answer for how many English dubbed episodes there were.

The Dutch series ran for 52 twenty-two minute episodes. Each episode was made up of two stories meaning there were 104 stories in total. I've found two conflicting episode guides so I'm trying to figure out what's going on there. Anime News Network has a listing of 44 of the 52 episodes. The other (which appears to be a fan site) lists 48 different titles for the 104 stories. Can anybody shed any light on this confusing matter?

Dutch Titles.

As far as I can tell this and the first Ox Tales episode that I found are the only two existing Ox Tales related items uploaded to YouTube.

The theme was sung by Dutch singer Jody By.

As an aside note, I received an email confirmation from Video Group Distributors telling me that they've shipped "Ollie, Ollie Oxen" today. HOORAY FOR ME!!!

Ox Tales Lyrics

Some more findings from my trips around the WWW. I am now in possession of the opening titles lyrics from the American and Dutch versions.

Here are the English lyrics:

Hey big guy, you are my kind of hero. Kinda shy, but you're nobody's fool.
Make me cry with laughter at the silly things you do. Flying high whenever I'm with you.
Hey big guy, you sure can make my heart smile. Ain't no lie, you've got me in a spin.

You and I, together always having so much fun. Hey big guy, you are my Number One.

(musical interlude)

You and I, together always having so much fun - you and I hey big guy.

And now here are the Dutch lyrics:

Welke os kan ons iets leren?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes
En een fietsband repareren?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes

Rock en Roll en ook nog de Sambad
anst hij met je mee

Wie laat zich niet koeioneren?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes

Boes Boes
Boes Boes

For those of you who aren't fluent in Dutch (first and foremostly me), here is the English translation:

Which ox can learn our something?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes

And repair a bicycle link?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes

Rock and Roll and also still the samba
he dances with your

Who one can't bully?
Boes Boes
Boes Boes

Boes Boes
Boes Boes

The Italian version is basically a carbon copy of the Dutch version as far as the music goes. Lyrically it just leaves in the "Boes Boes" lines.

First Two Videos Ordered...

Finally ordered my first two Ox Tales videos today. Bought both of them through sellers on Amazon.

The first is Funny Farm Madness. From information that I have gathered on the internet it was first distributed on October 17th, 1990 and contains one hour of footage. I paid $1.99 for the tape and $2.49 for the shipping.

The second is "Ollie, Ollie Oxen". It was first distributed on November 13th, 1991 and contains 75 minutes of footage. I paid $5.49 for the tape and $2.49 for the shipping.

I've already received an email telling me that Funny Farm Madness has shipped. My hat goes off to you Bargain Benny! I also got an email from Video Group Distributors, who are sending "Ollie, Ollie Oxen", telling me that my order was being processed. It could take a little while longer to receive that one but I should have Funny Farm Madness to keep me occupied in the mean time!

No S---, Sherlock...

Ever had one of those moments where you felt really stupid because you hadn't realized something that was blatantly obvious?

Whilst browsing through my screen caps this morning I came across this image. A pair of clogs. Ollie wears clogs. Clog wearing is a Dutch tradition. OF COURSE OX TALES WAS FREAKING DUTCH!!! Boy do I feel silly. I just thought he wore those for comical effect. And the more I think about it, Ox Tales oozes the Dutch sense of humour. Anybody who has ever been to the Netherlands knows what I'm talking about!!!

Ox Tales to Boes Translations.

Using a free online Dutch to English translator (http://www.worldlingo.com/en/products_services/worldlingo_translator.html) I discovered that the first episode (in the Netherlands at least) was called "Hello Boes". 45 episodes have been released in the Netherlands over a course of 11 DVDs, distributed by Kingsma Productions b.V.

On the screen cap above where it says "In de Hoofdrol Guido Jonckers", that translates to "In the Head Role Guido Jonckers" (Guido Jonckers was the guy who provided Boes' voice (Ollie) in the Dutch show).

Here is a list of some of the character's original names in the Boes TV show:

Ollie - Boes
Jack - Dolly (it lists Dolly as Boes' girlfriend?!?!)
Dog (name unknown) - Fag
Edward - Tum-Tum
Gaylord - Shampo
Rodney - Willy
Mother Pig (name unknown) - Ping

Breakthrough!!!

Made a major breakthrough in researching Ox Tales today. It turns out it was based on a Dutch comic strip by Wil Raymakers and Thijs Wilms and was originally called "Boes". From the scans I've seen, the comic strip had a wicked, sick sense of humour. It contained stuff that would have never made it onto kids TV! I'm looking forward to seeing if I can lay my hands on any of the comic strips or merchandise.

The show ran for 52 thirty minute episodes. It was a Dutch/Japanese co-production and was syndicated in 10 different countries. Here is a list of it's several different names:

げらげらブース物語 (Japanese)
مغامرات بسيط (Arabic)
Boes (Dutch)
Boes Boes (Dutch)
Chuckling Bus Story of Boes
Fantazoo (Italian)
Funny Farm Madness
Geragera Bus Monogatari (Japanese)
Ollie Ollie Oxen
Story of the Geragera Bus
BOF! (French)

First Episode on YouTube

In a Google search for Ox Tales I came across the first episode of Ox Tales on YouTube. As you can probably guess you could have knocked me down with a feather. I was able to watch Ox Tales again after forteen years of not being able too!

Much kudos go to YouTube member Jackster3000. Nice work. Do you have anymore?

I've written the first episode synopsis and grabbed 205 screen caps from it. Not bad huh? Hopefully there will be many more to come.

I've also managed to download the opening and closing titles of Ox Jales, the Italian version (I think) of Ox Tales. Worth tracking down. MUSH PUSH! MUSH PUSH!

Also came across a three panel Ox Tales comis strip. Funny, if not a little bit too adult. I'll be uploading this later.

Welcome!!!

Welcome to the "Hey Big Guy" blog. Basically this is going to be the online blog following the journey/progress of setting up a tribute website. The show that's being honored is Ox Tales. A kid's TV show from the late '80s.

I have great memories of Ox Tales. During the six weeks holidays in the early '90s my best friend Simon, my brother, sister and I would watch Ox Tales during the children's TV block that we so used to look forward to every summer. It was so different compared to everything else at the time. Animation with an edge!

So I was quite disappointed to discover that no be-all-and-end-all tribute site existed on the WWW. There are a couple of tidbits around but nothing of any substance. And most of them aren't even in english. So as my brother and I always say: If you can't find one, create it yourself. So here we are today.

Plan of action #1: Track down official Ox Tales episodes on commercial VHS...
